Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Office investigating Dadeville double murder

DADEVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Office has announced that it is conducting an investigation into the shooting deaths of two men at a Dadeville residence last week.

Authorities say Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Deputies were notified of several gunshots being fired in the area of the 11000 block of Highway 50 in Dadeville around 10 p.m. on November 20.

Montgomery resident, 44-year-old Derrick Laphonso Wright, was found at a nearby residence suffering from gunshot wounds that resulted in his death. Dadeville residence, 30-year-old Renard Kendale Brooks had also sustained a gunshot wound. He was transferred to UAB Medical Center where he died from his injuries the next day.

Deatsville man sentenced to prison for abusing his twin boys

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - An Elmore County man has been sentenced to prison for child abuse involving his two young sons.

An Autauga County Judge sentenced 22-year-old Mohamad Osman of Deatsville to serve 20 years in prison following his conviction on aggravated child abuse charges.

Authorities say the child abuse involved Osman's twin boys who were only one-year-old at the time of the reported abuse.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, no additional details could be released.

Former Montgomery Fire Fighter pleads guilty to electronic solicitation of a child

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - A former Montgomery Fire Fighter and Elmore County youth sports coach pleaded guilty to electronic solicitation of a child Wednesday morning in an Autauga County court.

According to authorities, John Montague pleaded guilty this morning to two counts of electronic solicitation. Montague originally turned himself in to the Elmore County Sheriff's Office back in October of 2011 after he was charged with harassment in Elmore County for allegedly kissing a 13-year-old girl and sending her inappropriate text messages. Montague was charged with two counts of electronic solicitation in Autauga County a month later.

Documents state that police believe Montague used a cell phone to attempt to arrange meetings with a child under the age of 16 for sexual purposes at both Birmingham Southern University and Edgewood Academy back in September 2011.

AL Dept of Labor prosecutes several Alabamians for unemployment compensation fraud

Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees announced today that the Department has successfully prosecuted several Alabamians for unemployment compensation fraud. The following individuals were charged with violating the Alabama Unemployment Compensation Law by making false statements in claims for benefits:

Feleicia Cobb, of Montgomery, was tried in Montgomery County District Court on October 22, 2012. An investigation by Labor’s Benefit Payment Control Section determined that Cobb received a total of $3,672.00 in benefits to which she was not entitled.

Cobb pled guilty and was sentenced to one year in jail, which was suspended. She was also ordered to pay a $262.00 fine, court costs, and restitution in the amount of benefits received illegally.

Roland Prickett, of Opelika, was tried in Lee County District Court on October 30, 2012.

TALLASSEE, AL (WSFA) -  Family members at a one-story home on Griffith Lane in north Tallassee were too distraught to say anything publicly after a family fight turned deadly, the city's first homicide of 2012.

 "We've never get any calls in that part of town," said Tallassee Police Chief Jimmy Rodgers. 

Rodgers says it started when 21-year-old Christian Kyle Adkins got a call from his mother-in-law to come help her.

On Saturday night, October 13, 2012 at around 10:00 P.M. Officers responded to the area of Gilmer Avenue near Knox Street due to reported shooting.   Officers had been conducting a traffic investigations at CVS Pharmacy parking lot, when they audibly heard gun fire in the direction of McDonalds. Officers responded to the scene and found a Mitsobishi Montero sport SUV in the roadway with one gun shot to the front windshield. Officers determined that the only injuries were from glass fragments. The investigation determined that the offenders were possibly in a small vehicle, possibly at white Chevy Malibu which was seen traveling at a high rate of speed south on Jordan Avenue, occupied by two black males. Further investigation into the events led investigators to a residence on Joy Street were it was determined that same individuals had forcibly entered the residence and discharged a firearm, and left with a video gaming system.

Authorities searching for two escaped inmates from the Elmore County Jail

ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) - Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin says authorities are searching for two men who escaped from the Elmore County Jail Monday night.

Authorities say the two inmates, 40-year-old Jamie Morgan and 33-year-old Jeremy Hadden, were in their cell at a check at 9:03 p.m. The two managed to escape some time before the next check at 10 p.m. Sheriff Franklin said the building was compromised at that time but could provide no additional details regarding the escape.

Morgan, from Montgomery, had been in the Elmore County Jail for 51 days charged with six counts of second-degree theft of property. Hadden, from Mobile, had been serving in the Elmore County Jail for 224 days for prior escape charges as well as two counts of theft of property first-degree.

Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dogs have been called in to assist in the search. It is believed the escapees traveled by foot approximately one mile north on 231 at the wood line.
