TALLASSEE, AL – Emily Pearl Buice of Tallassee was recently awarded a Full Scholarship to Troy University’s Summer Music and Leadership Camp, to be held June 12-16 at the University
Emily is the daughter of George and Rachel Barker and Reuben Buice, all of Tallassee. Her sister, Ellen Barker, is currently a majorette in the Troy University “Sound of the South”.
Emily plays clarinet in the Southside Middle School Band and has been first chair for two years. She also was the first clarinetist at SMS since the 2005-2006 school year to be selected for the All-District Band. Emily also attended the Troy University Honor Band and Auburn University Honor Band this year, and was selected for the Gold Band at Troy – the top performing ensemble. Emily studied clarinet privately with former Tallassee High School band director Mr. Linwood Erb.
Miss Buice was one of only 10 scholarship winners, out of hundreds who attend the annual camp. The Troy University Summer Music and Leadership Camp is the oldest of its kind in the southeast, having been held each year since 1967. The camp was founded by former “Sound of the South” director Dr. Johnny Long.
